Saturday 5th March was sunny, if a little cold first thing.
The team of volunteers raked cut grass by the ride, then turned their attention to removing tree guards from 4-year-old saplings on Pennycroft. The mesh type of guard has been chosen because the ground here can flood; solid guards would hold the flood water and lead to the young trees rotting.
Branches grow through the holes in the mesh, which means that the guards have to be cut in order to remove them and cannot be re-used. On the other hand, the cable ties are re-usable, and most of the stakes come out of the ground without breaking.
There are a lot more tree guards left, so this is a work in progress!
