Cutting off tree guards, Pennycroft
Cutting off tree guards, Pennycroft

An elite group of volunteers turned up for the first Muck-In Morning of 2024.

The first task was cutting off tree guards in the Pennycroft area. The trees were planted with stakes, tree guards and cable ties. The guards prevent the saplings from being browsed and killed by grazing animals.

When the trees are big enough, the guards have to be removed. Sometimes branches have grown through the mesh, so they can be difficult to get off. We use Stanley knives or secateurs to cut them off.

The cable ties are reusable.

The second task of the morning was coppicing trees.
